Training & Experience
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. I have been working with children (4+), adolescents and families for 30+ years in a variety of settings. I've lived and worked in the Fredericksburg area since 1995 and currently also work as a school social worker for Spotsylvania County Public Schools. I enjoy individual, group and family work and believe in the importance of collaboration, when appropriate.
I have extensive experience working with clients who are experiencing concerns related to adoption, grief, family stress, attachment, and trauma. For the past 10 years I have been working to help families and students address issues that impact access to education such as learning disabilities, depression and mood disorders, anxiety, and ADHD. I also have significant experience working with students and adults who have immigrated to the United States and with clients who are exploring LGBTQIA issues and concerns.
My work with children under 10 typically includes their caregivers. Active parent involvement is a requirement for any attachment-based services. I enjoy working with caregivers to develop parenting strategies that meet the specific needs of their children. I also work with non-cohabiting parents on ways to improve co-parenting.
Therapeutic Approach
My treatment approach focuses on understanding the unique needs of each client/family and creating a plan to reach identified goals. I work with clients to uncover root causes, cognitive distortions, and patterns of learned/adapted behaviors that are impeding growth and symptom relief. My approach is integrative, drawing deeply from Attachment and Family Systems Theory. I incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, problem solving therapy, and motivational interviewing. I am a TF-CBT trained therapist. I use play-based therapy, expressive therapies, and mindfulness techniques.
